Marans.
The Marans chicken originated in the Marans area of France. It is famous for its dark brown eggs and its feathered legs. The hens original colour is black with a copper neck, while the cockerel has a black body with copper back and a stunning gold and orange mantle. Now the colours are plentiful for those who prefer something a little different. They come in Blue copper, cuckoo, Silver and Wheaten as well as the original Black Copper. We breed the Blue copper and Black Copper variety, but due to the way blue chickens are created, some splash colours occur. The eggs from these three range from dark brown to almost red.

Black Copper Marans.
The Copper cockerel is stunning to look at and the epitome of the farmyard chicken. He is quite vocal and very energetic. He looks after his hens well and is a good forager.
This breed gets on well in a mixed flock of similar sized birds.

The hen is fairly drab compared to her consort, but very busy.
She will lay about 200 - 250 dark brown eggs per year.
They can be good mothers if left to incubate a batch of eggs, but they need to be separated as they get very territorial while the chicks are young.
These chicks are about 2 days old.
Here are some Black Copper Marans eggs.
Copper Blue Marans.
The copper blue is a striking bird. The cockerel big and bold. Its chest and body feathers are soft blue colour and the rest are a deep bright orange.
It is similar in nature to the other Marans, but I find it to be slightly more docile.

The hens blue colour has dark and light areas to the feathers, giving them a soft iridescence that is shown off to perfection in the sunlight. Their copper neck feathers can range from light, as in this picture,
to a darker more perfuse colouring.
They will lay up to 250 eggs per year and these will be dark brown with a little mottling.
